The Discord Dilemma

As I see it there are three primary reasons why TeamSpeak is used over Discord:
  1. The inability to see IP address (to prevent alts)
  2. The current already-created infrastructure and features
  3. The better audio quality of TeamSpeak

On the other side, there are four reasons why Discord would be better:
  1. Free Mobile App (TeamSpeak costs $4.99 on iOS)
  2. Free server cost (Reduce total server overhead)
  3. Much better interface
  4. Webhooks for integration with the server via plugins

So the question becomes, do these benefits justfify the time and effort to recreate the existing infrastructure? Through a plugin command it would be very simple to:
  1. Link the command sender's Minecraft UUID with their Discord account
  2. Check whether the command sender already has a linked Discord account
  3. Check whether the command sender's IP has already linked a Discord account
  4. Change the command sender's role in the Discord channel to be able to use text/voice

Being able to get the Minecraft user's IP address deals with the issue of the inability to get it through Discord. By requiring a linked account through a simple in-game command, you can easily prevent alts. I am happy to work with the server administration to create this if it at all sounds interesting.

All the high staff of the server prefer TeamSpeak.

We have no intention to switch over to Discord. If anyone would like to use Discord, they can easily make their own Discord server.

If I were to hypothetically create a Discord server and plugin to integrate these features, would it be endorsed by the staff? As in the ability to link accounts through a server command?

No. We have a perfectly fine TeamSpeak server.

No. We have a perfectly fine TeamSpeak server.

Is the issue that you think having both would split players between the two, meaning each would only be half as active?

Your proposition of someone creating their own Discord server isn't really made in good faith because of the established server rules. A server-wide Discord would be dead in the water because of advertising and no links in chat rules. Getting members would have to be one by one over /msg - and even that would probably qualify as spam.

You're making an appeal to authority fallacy: "because the high staff likes it, then it's the right thing to use". I've seen players in chat unable to use TeamSpeak because they can't buy the $4.99 app for their phone. You've never used a fully integrated Discord for the server, so how can you say that you perfer TeamSpeak over something that has never been done? This seems like an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation, but that usually ends up killing innovation.

I have used Discord. I prefer the TeamSpeak* voice chat and capture settings. Teamspeak is free to install on PC/Mac. Please stop trying to argue about this, as I said we have no intention to switch.
